1889 Contract Lane
#mcm #systemicracism #racisthouse #contractlending In the 1950s and 60s, contract lending was one of the primary means middle-class black Americans had to buy homes. Real estate agents would lean in on white fears by telling them a black family was moving in nearby, buy the house at a loss and then jack the price up for a black family to move in "on contract." If they missed a payment, they were swiftly evicted, with the seller keeping their deposit and leaving them with nothing.
