When the Jack of Clubs avowed his love for one of the Queen of Hearts' handmaidens, he was to be stripped of his court status and exiled. Before departing the castle, he challenged the Queen to croquet and if he won he would be allowed to leave with his true love. Keeping cool and not losing his head, he defeated the Queen.
