In 1895 industrialist Matthias Cork built his new bride Eugenia an embellished Victorian house overlooking the Corktown copper mines (which would later become Strangerville). Locals called it The Filigree House for its ornamented details and "snobby airs", but they quickly welcomed the feisty Eugenia as an ambassador of cultured living.
