I don't know about anyone else's student commons, but my school's offered a heck of a lot more things to do than what's included in the Maxis version. So I revamped it so there were things to do academically and recreationally. My real commons didn't have a laundry or overnight rooms but... sometimes I didn't want to send a sim home lol.
