A little Black History, during slavery, the black enslaved people were not allowed to marry; it was actually against the law. So, in order to signify marriage, these dynamic, resilient people created a custom, where they would exchange vows, and the sweep in front of them (sweeping away the dust of the past), then lay the broom down, and jump over it; crossing over into their new life, toghether.
