Whilst the modern basset hound originated in 19th century France, the history of short-legged scenthounds possibly dates to Ancient Egypt by recent discoveries. The first mention of a hound roughly matching the Basset Hound's physique appears within the mid-16th century; it is presumed these ancestors were backcrossed into the St. Hubert's hound untill the late 18th century.
