The Laughing Buddha
#Budai (#Chinese: #布袋, 10th century ~ 916/917) is a semi-#historical Chinese #Buddhist #monk who is #venerated as #Maitreya (a #future #Buddha or #bodhisattva who will #appear on #Earth) in #Chan (or #Zen) #Buddhism. His name literally means "#cloth #sack", and refers to the #bag he carries. His #jolly #nature, #humorous #personality, and #eccentric #lifestyle distinguish him from most Buddhist #masters. He is almost always shown #smiling or #laughing, hence his #fitting #nickname.
