Persephone was the goddess queen of the underground (Hades) and also the goddess of spring growth. She was abducted by Hades, god of the underworld, who was deeply in love with her. In exchange for marrying Hades, she made a deal with her father Zeus to spend 2/3 of her time on earth and 1/3 in the underground, which is how seasons were created.
