The first written reference to the breed dates to 14th century Spain where they were described as possessing "beautiful colors". Over the centuries, the Alano Español discovered itself entangled within the treacherous world of bullbaiting until the late 19th century. From there it was employed to wrangle feral cattle; a job which the breed is renowned for to this day!
