Frightened by the magic, his parents sent him to his long lost cousin, Nesley, in hopes he could get Barnum to suppress his powers. But Barnum and Nesley didn't see eye to eye, and when Nesley's transmutation spell went wrong, Barnum found himself stuck inside a dog's body - with his human brain intact. Barnum fled, met Amos, and became the circus's Talking Dog.
