His Imperial Majesty Meiji (Mutsuhito) "The Great", Emperor, or "Tenno", of Japan and his wife the Empress Shoken. Meiji came to the throne in 1868 and oversaw the transition of his country from a feudal state to an industrial world power. Both figures were difficult to create, in large part due to the Emperor's habit of wearing a single military uniform at all times, and his wife's unusual facial structure.
