My basic idea for this family was a single dad with some kids. If you look at Greyson's(the dad) back you'll notice a butterfly tattoo. I created the story that his wife died and he got a tattoo in memory of her and then his three kids. I also had the idea that Christa went thro chemo and that's why her head is shaved and why some of her personality traits are as such.
