After being betrayed by Sepiroth, and surviving the destruction of Nibelheim, Zack and Cloud hitched a ride on the back of a pick-up truck towards Midgar. They planned on becoming mercenaries together, but their arrival was delayed by a few years due to Shinra troops always in pursuit. Sharing multiple life-and-death situations together strengthened their bond.
