In the 1700's, women were barred from freedoms men enjoyed. Interestingly, both Anne Bonny (1700-1782) & Mary Read (1685-1721) were dressed as boys when young. Mary, as a "man", worked as soldier & sailor. In 1720, she joined pirates Jack Rackham & Anne Bonny, who had left her husband for the high seas.
