The Great Dane is a mastiff breed that was first recognized by a kennel club in 1887, but the breed greatly predates that recognition. They were bred to hunt large game, and guard estates. Show lines now exist and can be calmer, but they still prefer daily exercise. Although known as a calmer Mastiff, as with all mastiffs, some will not care for other dogs.
