The Tosa or Japanese Mastiff was developed sometime in the late 1800's from local Japanese fighting dogs, and Mastiff breeds. They were primarily used as fighting dogs and guard dogs. In some countries, some Tosa dogs are shown in conformation dog shows, or weight pull events. Well socialized Tosas from reputable breeders are said to be very loyal to their human family.
