Empress Wu Zetian (625 - 705) was the only female emperor of Imperial China. As a child her father encouraged her to develop her intelligence through reading, writing and studying, which were normally the domain of men only. Wu was very beautiful and entered court as a concubine. She went on to become empress consort, then empress dowager, before finally declaring herself emperor in 690 CE. #historical #woman #lady
